Investigation of Second-Harmonic Generation and Molecular Orientation in Electrostatically Self-Assembled Thin Films

چکیده
We report the observation and measurement of second-harmonic generation in self-assembled ultra thin film nonlinear optical materials using a femtosecond high repetition rate laser system. Second-harmonic intensity, as a function of the incident angle in these films, has been measured using incident p-polarized and s-polarized optical beam components. The second-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities of the thin films have also been determined. Using a curve fitting method and a crystal reference material, we have obtained second-order susceptibilities χ333 = 6.17 ± 0.18 pm/V and χ311 = 0.68 ± 0.02 pm/V at a fundamental wavelength of 1,200 nm. Based on linear molecular model approximation, we have also used the fitted data to investigate the average orientation distribution of the chromophore dipoles in the self-assembled film. The result indicates that the average tilt angle of the chromophore dipoles away from the substrate normal line is 25.2° ± 0.8°.

Second Harmonic Generation Diagnostic of Layer by Layer Deposition from Disperse Red 1–Functionalized Maleic Anhydride Copolymer
Layer-by-layer (LBL) electrostatic assembly of poly-electrolytes is proving to be an increasingly rich and versatile technique for the formation of multilayered thin films with a wide range of electrical, magnetic, and optical properties. In the present work we synthesized a new nonlinear optical (NLO) maleic acid copolymer containing Disperse Red 1 moieties, built-up multilayer assemblies by a...

We have compared the plasmonic enhancement of second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties in two types of ionic self-assembled multilayer (ISAM) films combined with Ag nanoparticles fabricated using nanosphere lithography (NSL). The light-concentrating properties of the Ag particles lead to a marked increase in the NLO efficiencies of thin ISAM films. The induced enhancement is found to be ...

We report on the influence of molecular chemical structure on second harmonic activity in several homologous series of self-assembling short chain polymers containing both molecularly rigid and flexible segments and known to form supramolecular nanostructures. The second-order nonlinear optical susceptibility and physical structure of films formed by these molecules were investigated by second ...
متن کاملPlasmon-enhanced second-harmonic generation from ionic self-assembled multilayer films.
We have demonstrated large enhancements of the effective second-order nonlinear susceptibility (chi(2)) of ionic self-assembled multilayer (ISAM) films, causing a film with just 3 bilayers to be optically equivalent to a 700-1000 bilayer film. This was accomplished by using nanosphere lithography to deposit silver nanoparticles on the ISAM film, tuning the geometry of the particles to make thei...
متن کاملElectrostatic Self-Assembly of Linear and Nonlinear Optical Thin Films
This dissertation demonstrates the feasibility of using novel electrostatic self-assembly (ESA) methods to fabricate linear and nonlinear optical thin films and components. The ESA process involves the layer-by-layer alternate adsorption of anionic and cationic complexes from aqueous solutions. Selection of the molecules in each layer, their orientation at the molecular level, and the order in ...
